Bird and I have decided to each pick our top 3 must-haves for Fall, and I’m up first, so here you go! Drumroll, please….
1. THE DENIM JACKET: My first Fall Essential was an easy pick. A few weeks ago, Shadd glanced around our bedroom and said, “Do you realize there are four photos in here with you in a denim jacket? And they range in time period from a few months ago to almost 10 years ago. Maybe it’s time to get a new look.”
Ok, Shadd. Thanks for the fashion advice, buddy. But I’m not sure I’m ready to receive wardrobe tips from the guy who transitions from summer to fall simply by switching from short sleeve Wrangler snap shirts to long sleeve Wrangler snap shirts. Instead, I will consider the jean jacket one of my staples, a must have that will stand the test of time. I’ve had two denim jackets that have been with me for almost 10 years, one is a lighter colored, soft Gap version, and the other is a stiffer, darker denim from JCrew. In the collage below, you’ll see they’ve been with me for weddings, everyday life, New Year’s Eve costume parties, vacations to Hawaii, Mexico, New York, and more.
Now one would think two denim jackets would be a sufficient amount, but this last spring, I purchased my 3rd jean jacket, and I have to say THIS is the greatest jean jacket ever! It is a bit more fitted than my other two, has a lighter wash, and is softer than you could ever imagine. Several of my friends have added this jacket to their wardrobes as well, which admittedly has resulted in a few occasions of “jean jacket twins”. But, it’s that great; trust me. If you’re looking for a great Fall transition piece, look no further! I got mine at Pretty Please here in Scottsdale, but for you out-of-towners, you can find it online.
2. SCARVES: I decided to look through more of my photos to see if a clothing item stuck out as another staple of mine, and it didn’t take long to realize I wear a lot of scarves. A lot. I guess they are an easy way to spice up a basic t-shirt and jean outfit, and here in Arizona, sometimes you can get away with a t-shirt and scarf long into the winter months. Whether drinking wine, holding babies, or oohing and ahhing at the Bellagio fountains, scarves were my friend.
The scarf I wear the most is a dark raspberry colored scarf (top left in the collage). I usually pair it with black and it adds a pop of color and makes me feel a bit more put together. It was actually a gift years ago from one of my students, but I found a similar one HERE. My new favorite scarf is a beige fringe scarf (top right pic) that I got last winter at Nordstom. I don’t think they have the exact one anymore, but the same maker has a cool new version for this year. Check it out HERE. Long live the scarf!
3. LEOPARD: For my last Essential, I chose a something new that I have added to my wardrobe-Leopard. I have had this pair of Sam Edelman flats on my Nordstrom wish list for about a year, but I received a DSW rewards coupon in the mail so I decided to check out their leopard flat selection and left with THESE.
They have a very small wedge built into the sole that you really don’t notice but it makes them super comfortable. I wore these for a day of walking around New York City, that’s how comfortable they are.
I also added THIS simple leopard belt to my wardrobe on a recent Target run, and have worn it several times already. Cute and cheap!
A few of my other recent Fall purchases include THIS buffalo plaid shirt in red from the Gap (which happens to look pretty good with my leopard flats!) and THIS graphic t-shirt that I’ve practically been living in. Lots of red going on for Fall. Well, it’s still pretty warm here in Arizona, but hopefully we’ll get to fully bust out our Fall favorites in just a few weeks. OK, Bird, you’re up! I can’t wait to see what you’ve got on your Essentials list!
