I have been going to Colorado since I was very little and it continues to be one of my family’s favorites for a vacation destination. Winter is usually the time I visit because I love to ski, but summer time can be just as fun! For the last couple of years, Grant has made a trip to the Lacy Ranch in Crested Butte. He takes all of his three year old horses or what we call “Futurity horses” to work fresh cattle that have been turned out to graze over the summer before heading to the feed lots. (You know what happens from there)
This trip for these horses is so important to help further their training in preparation for the upcoming fall and winter shows as well as providing a break from the scorching Texas heat! It’s pretty much a vacation with horses! Can’t beat that!! This was my first time to Crested Butte and I’ve always heard so many wonderful things about this quaint and beautiful town- breathtaking views, countless hiking trails, whitewater rafting, shopping, and world class dining to name just a few.
One of the highlights of our trip was white water rafting. Such a blast! I would do this again in a heartbeat! We used Three Rivers Resort and Outfitting and they were great! We picked the Taylor River, a class three (out of 5) and it’s as they say in the brochure “something for everyone, mild to wild.”
One thing you can always bet on in Crested Butte is a fantastic meal at just about every restaurant. Soupcon is one of Crested Butte’s finest dining spots. It is nestled in a cute miner’s cabin off the main drag in town and you must make reservations because its super tiny and super popular! The menu is French American and all I can say is “wow”! The Gas Cafe is a must stop for the best breakfast sandwiches in town! We seriously went there every morning before working horses-oh, and don’t forget to tip the cook! The Wooden Nickel is a staple in this town and is very popular with the locals, great bar too. Sushi in Crested Butte, of course! Lil’s Sushi Bar & Grill is amazing and has plenty of room for larger parties. Bonez is one of the newer places in town and is owned by the same owners as Secret Stash (best pizza in town) Bonez has a fun atmosphere and the best Mexican food. The street tacos were my favorite. All I can say is you can literally eat your way through this town!!
Crested Butte has some of the most beautiful hiking trails and if you’re up for a challenge, it would be the hike to the top of Mt.Crested Butte. Well, I can proudly say that I’ve done it! It was no easy task and at times I felt as though my lungs were going to explode, but it was well worth it. I can not put into words how beautiful the view from 12,000 feet is but I tried my best to capture with pics……
I come from a family of avid golfers, my dad is borderline obsessed. So for our last adventure we went golfing at The Club at Crested Butte. Now I have played quite a few times throughout my life. I actually won the longest drive contest at Ben Hogan’s golf camp in Jr.High so naturally I’m pretty comfortable on the course. Well, let’s just say, I need to have a little refresher lesson-many lessons. I haven’t played 9 holes in like FOREVER and the same for Grant, but we had too much fun…thanks to the nice beer cart lady that pretty much followed us the entire time. 4 1/2 hours later, we completed the picturesque, but not so forgiving course. We had moments of PGA (or LPGA) like shots. I can still hit the crap out of the ball, just not where I intended it to go…
Grant and I will be heading back to Crested Butte very soon and I wouldn’t mind doing all of this all over again! There is something special about this town and I have a feeling that this will become one of my favorite places to visit. Now I’m ready to conquer those slopes!!!
