Summer is in full swing here in Arizona. We have a few precious weeks at home in between horse shows, and we spend that time immersed in our summer routine that alternates between days when Gracie attends pre-school and I work in the office and my favorite Tuesdays/Thursdays when we have swim lessons, head to the gym, and then usually run some errands. Thrilling, I know. With temps hitting 110 several times in the last few weeks, Shadd heads to the barn before sun-up and is usually done riding by lunchtime.
One of our summer rituals is choosing a show to binge watch on Netflix. We spent a good month’s worth of afternoons and late nights several years ago OBSESSED with Friday Night Lights. We were both ready to marry Tim Riggins and/or move to Texas asap. Thankfully, we completed that series, moved on to Sons of Anarchy and abandoned our high school football dreams as we contemplated joining a motorcycle gang. We take our television seriously. A few of our other favorites over the years have included Breaking Bad, The Killing, and House of Cards. Help, what should we watch next?
1. And that brings me to my first favorite thing right now-Orange Is The New Black. I just finished the 2nd season and wow, that’s a good show. It’s based on a Piper Kerman’s memoir chronicling her year in a women’s prison. It’s intense, funny, sad, and heartwarming all at once. Oh, and sometimes pretty graphic. But if you’re looking for a binge-worthy show, look no futher. The first two seasons are on Netflix now.
2. Have you heard Sam Smith’s voice? I first heard him a few months ago on Saturday Night Live and have since been eagerly awaiting his album release. Well, “In the Lonely Hour” is out now, and it’s amazing. This guy’s voice is just ridiculous and I could listen all day. The album is great, but he just did a cover of Whitney Houston’s “How Will I Know” which could make you cry….or at the very least it will make you a fan too.
3. What is a list of favorites without some type of food? My favorite thing in my fridge right now is Skotidakis Jalapeno Greek Yogurt Dip. Our local Costco sells it, and I usually buy two big containers at once. This stuff is delicious. with just a tiny bit of jalapeno heat. I use it on everything; as a dip for veggies and crackers, as a spread on sandwiches, and I even mix it in to sauces and pasta. This yummy dip has taken on a bit of a cult following in my little group of friends, and almost everyone I know keeps a tub on hand in their fridge.
4. OK, we’ll just stick with the “food” category-my other summer food obsession is the Quest Bar. About 6 months ago, a trainer at my gym was raving about these protein bars, so I ordered the Cookie Dough flavor from Amazon. It was good. I kept a box in my pantry and would eat one or two a week. But then…a game changer. Quest introduced the Cookies & Cream bar, and I was done. This is THE BEST TASTING protein bar ever, with the added bonus of only 1 gram of sugar along with 21 grams of protein. They offer a ton of flavors, but since tasting the Cookies & Cream, I can’t bring myself to try anything else. The whole family loves these, and we pack a box with us on our trips for easy snacks or meal replacements.
Thankfully, July is right around the corner…I have four more favorites ready to go! Let me know what you’re loving right now!
