I currently have a few musical obsessions, and when I fall for a musician or a band, it’s serious business. I wrote about a few of my all time favorites in one of my very first posts “Bear’s Most Played”. When I am a fan, I devote a lot of time-I listen constantly on Spotify, check tour dates online, and scour Youtube like a manic watching videos of live performances. Our bedroom at 10 o’clock on a Thursday night is a pretty rowdy place to be-Shadd on one side reading the latest Jack Reacher novel while I’m on my side with ear buds in watching Sturgill Simpson videos. Wild.
So, obviously Sturgill Simpson is my main man right now. I’d heard his name and seen some of my favorite bands and musicians tweeting about his new album, but I never got around to checking out his music, and I’m kicking myself. His music is what country music is meant to be. Seriously, just close your eyes and listen to him. His. Voice. Is. Ridiculous. I like a little old school country as much as the next person. Mainstream country radio just doesn’t do it for me anymore, and Sturgill is a breath of fresh air. He was just on Conan last week, and this is the video I’ve been listening to continuously. The video has over 14,000 views; I think about 200 of those are mine.
I love a great cover. Especially when an artist can take a song and completely re-invent it. Have a listen to this. All the way to the end.
Amazing, right? I’ve already bought my tickets for his concert here in Phoenix in November!
My second current obsession is nothing new; I’ve proclaimed my love for Sam Smith before on the blog. But I’m getting ready to fly to the big city (that would be New York City!!) to see him in concert this week. My favorite (only) brother, Grady, lives in NYC and got us tickets for Friday’s show at Hammerstein Ballroom. I am just a teensy bit excited, and therefore have been annoying most of my friends and obviously my husband with my constant Sam Smith talk. I listen to his album in my office for hours up on hours, and “Leave Your Lover” is hands down my favorite song. Oh, Sam…I have no words. Oh, wait-I have four words. See You On Friday!!!
You’re going to have to read one more Sam Smith post after I attend the concert, and then I promise I’ll try to move on. I’m open to suggestions…help guide me to my next obsession.
