The open road! For many of us “horse people” we spend a hell of a lot of time in the truck. Road trips are a constant throughout the year, and with the fall show season upon us, we definitely travel further and more often than most other months. The fall/winter show destinations are some of my favorites places as well as my favorite shows, but getting there, well it can be painfully monotonous. I remember as a kid, we were limited as far as things to keep us occupied. We didn’t get a mile down the road before someone (not me, of course) asked “Are we there yet?” or “How much longer?”, but nowadays there are so many more things to do to make that endless drive go by just a little bit faster.
Everyone has their favorite road trip snacks, and I’ve always stuck to my routine, only I add a few more healthy items than I did when I was younger. But let me be honest, sometimes I can’t fight my addiction to Sweet Tarts. Its usually happens when I’m wandering through the aisles of some Flying T Truck Stop in the middle of God knows where and I simply can’t fight it any longer! They are gluten free you know?
On the longer trips, I bring along a small cooler (I bought the perfect size at Target, find it HERE) to keep in the truck. It comes in very handy to keep extra drinks chilled and I usually throw in a few sandwiches/fruit as well. I’m not a huge coffee drinker, but I love the Starbucks double shot espressos to give me that little kick for those early mornings or late afternoons. (I try and avoid driving during those times at all cost, ugh!) Bear introduced me to Quest protein bars and I love the cookies and cream flavor, another good pick me up if you’re dragging.
I think everyone would agree that sunflower seeds are one of the most popular road trip snacks, and I didn’t know till recently that there are about a thousand flavors! My personal favorite is Spitz cracked pepper with a resealable bag. May I suggest having an empty cup with a lid handy……A spill of the used sunflower shells makes for a not so fun clean up.
As far as entertainment- I never leave home without my Ipad mini and Urbanears headphones (for consideration of the driver of course) I only have a few more episodes left of season two of Orange is The New Black then I’m moving on to House of Cards. I’m a bit late to the party with these shows, but it’s a great way to pass the time so long as service is working with my Netflix!
Sirius/XM radio is very very important, mostly because I’m a very big Howard Stern fan and listening to his morning radio shows have been a part of my ritual for a while now. His celebrity interviews are unlike any other! My other favorite stations are Alt Nation, BPM, Hip-Hop Nation, The Heat and The Highway- a little bit of everything. I also look to SoundCloud for a lot of my favorite DJ’s playlist. Kygo, Vice, and Diplo post my favorite sets.
It’s not a very good idea for me to read in the truck, I can get car sick just by reading billboard signs! So I like to listen to books on CD. Anything James Patterson keeps me captivated through his unimaginable murder plots and bone chilling suspense. The perfect author for those long drives!
My traveling attire is very simple- comfort is key so I go with my favorite OKC Thunder sweatshirt (pretty much my security blanket that goes with me everywhere), any of my Ellie or Lululemon leggings or capris, a comfy soft tank or t-shirt (Mossimo brand at target are perfect) and my Nike kicks!
As much as I sometimes dread some of these endless drives, I can’t complain because we are doing something we love with the horses that are so much a part of our family. Happy trails!!!
